What DEC Agencies are doing in Congo DR

In November 2008 the DEC launched an appeal for urgently needed funds to help ease the desperate plight of 250,000 people forced to flee their homes to escape fighting.  This was in addition to more than one million people already displaced by the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  

During December 2008, 12 DEC Agencies were allocated a share of appeal funds raised at that time totalling £5.5 million.   DEC Agencies report at end of February 2009 that they have spent £1,650,000 on aid.

In the early weeks of the aid response DEC Agencies provided vital food, water, shelter, emergency medical supplies, cooking equipment, blankets and clothes to families and individuals affected. 

Now four months on DEC Agencies have reached a total of 104,950 households including Host families who were helping displaced people.

Many people have been supported through:

  • Improved access to safe drinking water for 11,200 Households.   (Households normally consist of 5 people)

  •  Food distributions to 9,987 Households

  •  7,321 acutely malnourished children helped through nutrition programmes

  •  Free and subsidised medical treatment for 34, 312 Households

  •  Re-establishing primary health care services including drugs and medical equipment, maternity care, immunisation programmes, treating wounds and general medical conditions, providing care for the elderly

  •  Re-uniting lost children with their families

  •  Providing psycho-social support and care to victims of rape

The appeal to date has raised over £10.1million. DEC agencies will continue to provide assistance and support to people in Eastern D R Congo until the end of August 2009.

This appeal fund will close at end of May 2009.
