Thousands Of Brits Favour Donating Online To The Asia Quake Appeal
31 October 2005
As donations to the DEC’s Asia Earthquake Appeal hit the £25 million mark, the DEC (Disasters and Emergency Committee) today announces that for the first time ever – people are donating as much online as they are by phone.
The DEC is an umbrella organisation representing 13 leading aid agencies has run three appeals this year. The exceptional Tsunami Appeal saw twice as many people make telephone donations as online donations. Again in August this year, when the DEC launched the Niger Appeal, twice as many givers preferred to make their donations over the phone.
Now the figures for online and phone donations are almost equal.
Brendan Gormley, Chief Executive of the DEC said
“This appeal has clearly made a huge impact on the UK public and we are really grateful for all the donations received so far. It is fascinating that in the space of three months since the last appeal, that there has been such a change in the behaviour of donors.
“Making donations on our website is such a quick and simple way of pledging support that I'm sure it won't be long before we see that most donations are made in this way”
The DEC work is supported by a number of companies who run banners ad on their websites and provide free advertising space. Currently the most visitors to be re-directed to the DEC website have come from FT online, ITV.com and the Sun websites.
