£12 Million Is Given For The DEC Asia Quake Appeal

14 October 2005

More than seven million pounds has been pledged since the DEC’s Asia Quake Appeal had its national televised launch yesterday evening (Thurs). This brings the total for the appeal so far to more than £12 million.

Phone lines opened at midday on Tuesday (11 October) in response to the urgency of the situation, gearing up to yesterday’s major push. The money raised is already being spent by DEC member agencies, bringing aid to some of the most vulnerable survivors of the south Asia earthquake.

“As soon as the disaster hit, our agencies started spending money on essential relief items,” said DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley. “Many of the agencies have well established offices or close partner organisations in this region, which means they could respond immediately.”

The 13 DEC member agencies are Action Aid, British Red Cross, CAFOD, CARE International UK, Christian Aid, Concern, Help the Aged, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision.
