DEC Celebrity Launch/Photo call

13 October 2005

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Asian Quake appeal has its televised launch tonight at the BT Tower in London. A “live” call centre will be staffed by around 100 volunteers and celebrities who will answer phones from 5.45pm until midnight.

More than £5 million has already been pledged for the DEC appeal, but much more is hoped for after the phone lines go fully operational.

DEC agencies are already helping tens of thousands of people in the affected area, but more is needed to help the millions of people made homeless or otherwise suffering because of the earthquake.

WHERE: BT Tower, Ground Floor. Maple Street entrance, Maple Street, London W1P 6EA

WHEN: Thursday, October 13, entry from 4pm. Filming/photo opportunities from 5pm
For security reasons any attendees must bring photo identification, such as a passport or driving licence or Press Card.

CELEBRITIES TO ATTEND INCLUDE: TV/Radio Presenter Jamie Theakston; Eurovision song contest performer Javine; Goodness Gracious Me and Bend it Like Beckham star Nina Wadia; Coronation Street and Shameless actor Chris Bisson; Big Brother contestant Makosi; The Apprentice runner-up Saira Khan (who has family in Kashmir)

WHAT: Thirteen of the UK’s biggest international aid agencies are working closely together to provide blankets, tents, food, healthcare and emergency aid to those affected by the Asian earthquake. Around four million people are desperately in need of help and anything people can give will make a difference.

Volunteers will be on hand to cope with the surge of calls from the public. Celebrities will be available for photographs and filming. DEC member agency spokespeople will also be available for interview.
