DEC statement on flooding in southern England
24th July 2007
In response to the devastating floods in parts of Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, some members of the public and the media have asked why the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has not launched a crisis fundraising appeal.
The DEC will not be launching an appeal, for the following reasons:
- Our mandate specifically excludes disaster relief within the UK, because,
- Our members are UK registered charities whose main focus is humanitarian aid to disaster -stricken communities in the developing world.
Despite this, the DEC extends its sympathies to those affected by the floods in southern England and welcomes the fact that one of its major members, the British Red Cross, is working with emergency services in the affected areas
Find out what the British Red Cross are doing to help.
