East Anglians: England’s most generous donors to Bangladesh appeal

A week after the launch of the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for survivors of the Bangladesh Cyclone, it has emerged that people in East Anglia gave the highest average amount in England.

In East Anglia, people dug extra deep to help the five million people affected by the fiercest cyclone to hit Bangladesh in over a decade, giving an average donation of over £65.

Nationally the appeal has so far raised around £2.5million and donations are still coming in. To make a donation please visit the website at www.dec.org.uk or call 0870 60 60 900.

DEC Chief Executive Brendan Gormley said “I would like to thank the people of East Anglia for their generous response to the plight of the people in Southern Bangladesh who have seen their homes and lives destroyed by this cyclone.

“Around half a million homes have been completely destroyed and another 1.1million partially destroyed. Our member agencies are already hard at work on the ground giving out emergency help and helping to rebuild.

“There is a lot of work to be done but we are confident that the generosity of the British people will help us ensure that those affected by this terrible disaster get the help they need”
