Midlands digs deep for DEC Bangladesh Appeal
A week after its launch, people in the Midlands have responded generously to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for the survivors of the Bangladesh Cyclone.
In fact the region has given the highest amount outside London and the South East. So far donations from the Midlands account for almost 15% of all donations received.
To date the DEC appeal nationally has raised around £2.5million following a television appeal from West Bromwich Albion fan and TV presenter Adrian Chiles.
The donations will help to provide the five million people affected by the most ferocious cyclone to hit Bangladesh in over a decade with emergency help and then help to reconstruct the 500,000 homes completely destroyed.
DEC Chief Executive Brendan Gormley said: “This is a really encouraging start to the appeal from the Midlands and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed.
“For those who have not yet made a donation, there is still time. Just to rebuild all the homes that are completely destroyed is equivalent to rebuilding Birmingham so the money is very much needed.
There is a lot of work to be done but we are confident that the generosity of the British people will help us ensure that those affected by this terrible disaster get the help they need”
The average donation from the Midlands is over £55 per person.
