Welsh charities launch Bangladesh Cyclone appl
The Disasters Emergency Committee Cymru (DEC Cymru) is today (Thursday) launching an appeal in Cardiff to help millions of people left without food and shelter following the Bangladesh cyclone.
The DEC Cymru Appeal will provide desperately needed relief to people suffering after one of the most ferocious cyclones to hit Bangladesh in decades.
More than five million people have been affected. Families have been left without enough food, water, or shelter, while an estimated million homes have been destroyed or damaged and around a million acres of cropland devastated.
For donations, please log on to the DEC website at www.dec.org.uk or phone 0870 60 60 900.
Public donations will be used for immediate needs such as food, clean water, medicines and shelter. But the scale of the devastation is so immense that a huge relief and reconstruction effort will be needed over the coming months.
Richard Laydon, DEC Cymru Chair said: “We’re today asking the people of Wales to show their support for the people of Bangladesh by making a donation to the Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal.
“Our member agencies are already working in Bangladesh providing humanitarian aid and we know that funds are urgently needed to be able to continue this work. This is a terrible tragedy and the sheer scale of devastation and suffering means we must help in every way we can.”
DEC Cymru is Christian Aid, Cafod, Save the Children, Tearfund, Red Cross, Oxfam Cymru and Help the Aged in Wales.
DEC Cymru is launching the Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal for Wales at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, tomorrow (Thursday 22 November) at 10.00am.
Media interviews can be arranged with DEC Cymru Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal chair, Richard Laydon, and DEC Cymru representative Jeff Williams who is a Welsh speaker.
