Taking Part in an Event

Organising an event is a fantastic way to support the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), as it not only raises money for our appeals, it also raises awareness of what we do.

Camp Arrivals - Darfur and ChadEvent Ideas
From running your own club night to having a fancy dress day at work, organising events are a great way to bring people together to raise money. When running an event you must consider your budget, health, safety and insurance. It may be beneficial to contact your local council and police for advice.
Take advantage of any contacts you have, the local media, and friends and family so you can spread the word about your event and get as much support as possible.

Some ideas for events include:

  • Pub quiz
  • Football tournament
  • Fashion show
  • Club night

Download the Myanmar (Burma) Cyclone Poster (PDF) to use at events.

Taking Part in a Sponsored Event
A good way to raise money and awareness for the DEC is to ask friends and relatives to sponsor you if you are taking part in an event such as a marathon or sky dive. Look out for local sponsored events or organise your own  (if you organise your own event please make sure you consult your local police and council).

To help raise sponsorship money you can create your own personalised online fundraising page through www.justgiving.com/dec

Raffles and Lotteries
These can be a fantastic way to raise money, especially if you can persuade local businesses and friends to donate prizes. However, you must be careful to make yourself aware of the laws regarding organising a lottery or raffle. There are very strict laws relating to raffles and lotteries. Fundraisers must consult The Institute of Fundraising rules before organising a raffle or lottery.

It is recommended that anyone thinking of running a lottery in England, Wales or Scotland should get a copy of Lotteries and the Law available from the Gambling Commission. Anyone thinking of running a lottery in Northern Ireland should contact the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action for a copy of the booklet - Lotteries: a Guide for Voluntary Groups.
