22 Jan 09

  • The immediate shelter needs of those whose homes have been destroyed.
  • In the aftermath of the destruction there is need not only for food but also non-food items. The UN Relief Works Agency estimate a need for 22,000 mattresses, 23,000 blankets, tents- and basic household equipment including hygiene kits.
  • Children have been severely affected and traumatised by recent events. Child protection, establishing safe play areas and providing psychosocial support is an immediate priority.
  • This will be followed by efforts to quickly enable children to return to school. Temporary schools will be established whilst schools and kindergartens that have been used as shelters are repaired and made safe to enable them to be reopened.
  • Support to the ailing health service will include the provision of medicines and medical supplies to clinics, hospitals and neo-natal units. With 21 structures damaged or destroyed, mobile clinics will be set up to reach out to those in need of primary health care. Maternal and child care will have a special focus.
  • Many sources of livelihood have been destroyed by the conflict, particularly those of women. Reviving the private sector critical to livelihoods will reduce the long term dependency on aid.
