Update - What DEC agencies are doing in Congo (DR)

DEC Member Agencies are responding to the needs of many people displaced by the continuing crisis in the east of DR Congo and the host families who have supported them.

Many DEC Agencies already had ongoing programmes based in Goma so were in a position to quickly scale up.

DEC Agencies submitted their Disaster Response Plans to the Secretariat in January 2009. 

The early aid response is funded from various sources which will include, Agency own funds, DEC Congo (DR) Crisis Appeal funds and possibly grants from DFID.

The following is a list of aid items distributed by DEC Agencies

Relief Items Distributed

2841 family and hygiene kits

8,950 NFI (Non –Food Items) kits to IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps

36,500 blankets

2000 emergency kitchen sets, mosquito nets, blankets, mattresses and Clothing for children

Registration and distribution of household kits and hygiene kits in 31 IDP

sites in Goma town serving 2350 households

Agriculture and Gardening   - 74kgs of vegetable seeds distributed to 1864 households

Water and Sanitation

Construction of 20 emergency public showers and 6 public rubbish pits in Shasha IDP camp serving 919 households

15 public dustbins installed serving 1200 households    

Clean water distributed to 5,657 households

1200 kits for water storage distributed

185 Emergency latrines constructed

Shelter

8714 Emergency shelter kits distributed

Materials distributed for 2000 temporary shelters

Distribution of plastic sheeting for 3350 temporary households

Health and Nutrition

15 medicine kits provided to 5 health centres  - (Each health centre treats at least 60 people)

Distribution of 500 mosquito nets to pregnant women and women with infants    

Essential drugs and medicines delivered to over 40 health facilities able to treat 1000 households

Cholera treatment centre set up in Goma and supported in Bitshumbi            467 patients seen.

War wounded patients being treated.

Psychosocial support to women in IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps

Management of cholera – with 20 Ministry of Health staff at Karisimbi HZ

3,836 Households served by 3 Community based Therapeutic Care Centres providing for children with moderate to acute malnutrition.

More than 100 severely malnourished children admitted to stabilisation centres.

Therapeutic milk and system drugs delivered to two stabilisation centres

Training of National staff in the management of acute malnutrition

Training traditional leaders in application of key human rights

Training in community protection and family tracing

Food

16,400 basic short term food packages distributed

612 households received food distributions in Goma City

32,256 kgs Maize    

10,752 kgs Beans

 5,376 kgs Oil                      

Distributed  to 2,688 households 

Salt distributed to 144 households
