Why We Need Your Help

People waiting for help - Asia QuakeDisasters occur regularly all over the world. Sometimes when a disaster occurs, the usual in-country coping mechanisms do not have the resources to deal with the situation. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) aims to provide humanitarian aid in times like these and our members rely on the support from the public to enable them to do this.

Past responses have been overwhelming. Thanks to the generosity of the general public £13 million was raised to help the people of Darfur, Chad and Central Africa Republic, £60 million for the Asia Quake Appeal and a record breaking £390 million for the Tsunami Appeal.

Sri Lanka - Tsunami We never know when a disaster will hit or what scale it will be on so it is important that we gain continued support. The DEC relies on voluntary donations from the public to fund the work that our Members carry out. We need to be able to respond quickly and efficiently when a disaster such as a flood, famine or earthquake occurs. The quicker we are able to act, the more lives we can save.
