Tsunami Appeal
The DEC appeal is now closed having raised £390 Million but work continues in affected areas.
On 26 December 2004, South Asia, South East Asia and Somalia were hit by a series of tsunamis. Thousands lost their lives and millions saw their livelihoods and homes wiped out. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) launched an immediate appeal to respond to this devastating natural disaster.
Within one week of the tsunami unprecedented public and corporate generosity helped the DEC raise £60 million. By the end of February 2005 donations had reached £300 million.
As well as providing initial emergency aid, temporary housing, clean water, food supplies and medical services, the funds raised were so high that DEC trustees put in a place a three-year spending plan. The money raised has rebuilt villages, schools and hospitals and reinstated fishing ports and small factories.
India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Thailand, Sir Lanka and Somalia have all benefited from the generous donations of the UK public. The DEC and its members could not have achieved this without tsunami donors.

Restoring Livelihoods
