The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is a unique and dynamic membership organisation which comprises 15 of the UK’s leading humanitarian charities: ActionAid UK, Action Against Hunger, Age International, British Red Cross, CAFOD, CARE International UK, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide (UK), International Rescue Committee (IRC), Islamic Relief Worldwide, Oxfam GB, Plan International UK, Save the Children UK, Tearfund and World Vision UK.

Pooling our resources to work as one, we are pivotal in co-ordinating the UK public's response to overseas disasters. In collaboration with our Rapid Response Network of national media and corporate partners, we raise the alarm to the UK public and set up easy ways to donate, with the majority of our funds raised over an intensive two-week period following a disaster.

Since our launch in 1963, we have run over 70 fundraising appeals and raised more than £2bn, saving countless lives and rebuilding communities.

We are now looking for a Team Assistant for our Programmes and Accountability function to join us on a permanent, full-time basis, to help manage our three appeals; Coronavirus Appeal, Afghanistan Crisis Appeal and Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, comprised of two phases, respectively.

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced team administrator with a tenacious and “can do” approach to support colleagues in the day-to-day operational cycle of our appeals. The Team Assistant will play a key role in our continued efforts to support those impacted by the crisis in Afghanistan and the conflict in Ukraine.

In this highly rewarding position, your proactive approach and skilled ability to prioritise, plan and act as a will hold you in good stead to be an efficient support to a fantastic and driven team.

You will gain exposure to some of the leading humanitarian response agencies in the world, developing vital experience and the opportunity to learn in a fast paced and challenging environment.

As Team Assistant you will boost our Programmes and Accountability Team capacity by providing effective and efficient administrative, logistical support, diary management, and scheduling support activities. Utilising the appropriate software and tools, you will maintain accurate records and databases of these processes.

Additionally, you will:

  • Co-ordinate annual budget processes
  • Manage the DEC Knowledge Information Management System
  • Continuously develop and maintain templates including draft contracts and briefing slides

About you

To be considered for this role you will need:

  • Proven experience of providing administrative and operational support in a similar role
  • Proven experience of working in a high-pressure environment with multiple and complex priorities
  • Experience of creating and using spreadsheets for managing information
  • The proven ability to develop, maintain and improve administrative and operations systems   and procedures
  • Quantitative and qualitative data management and analysis skills
  • Good organisational and time-management skills
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office programmes
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • To be educated to degree level (or equivalent) or hold equivalent experience with an INGO

Ideally, you will have familiarity with monitoring and evaluation frameworks including budget or financial monitoring.

You may on occasion be required to work additional hours in response to an emergency, events held outside office hours or to extra workload. Where possible, notice of this will be given and TOIL (time off in lieu) is available. Occasional UK travel and overseas visits may be required.
