DEC Pakistan Floods Appeal hits £24m

18/08/2010

The Disasters Emergency Committee today announced that their appeal for people affected by the Pakistan floods has raised £24m with member agency relief efforts so far reaching over 700,000 people.

Disasters Emergency Committee Chief Executive Brendan Gormley said:

“The generosity of the UK public has been staggering. After two weeks, it is extraordinary that donations are still pouring in, showing that people continue to be moved by the unfolding disaster.

“The public has understood that this crisis is still growing in scale and requires ongoing support to make a real difference to the millions affected.

“With a fifth of Pakistan under water, aid agencies continue to work around the clock to reach those in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. And with the risk of diseases like cholera and malaria growing by the day, it is vital that people keep giving.”

The disaster has already claimed the lives of 1,600 people and is estimated to have affected 20 million people.

The DEC Pakistan Floods Appeal is separate from the pledges being sought by the United Nations which is hoping to secure funds from governments worldwide.
