DEC Statement on Italy Earthquake

09/04/2009

The Disasters Emergency Committee sympathises with the loss and destruction of life and property in Italy’s L’Aquila region as a result of the earthquake that struck on Monday 6 April.

Italy is well placed to respond to the needs of survivors and has significant resources to cope with the disaster internally. The DEC does not appeal for disasters in Europe as member states have substantial in-country coping mechanisms to effectively tackle disasters without needing external help.

The British Red Cross, a DEC member is supporting the Italian Red Cross’ Earthquake Appeal to which you can donate here if you wish. Donations made to the British Red Cross will help survivors of the earthquake to access health, first aid, logistics and humanitarian relief.
