Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal
Progress Report

In February 2023 the DEC launched the Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal after devastating earthquakes hit areas of southern Turkey and northwest Syria.

The appeal has now raised raised over £150 million.

The report looks at the first six months of the response, including:

  • The humanitarian context, with nearly 18 million people directly affected by the earthquakes across the two countries. At least 300,000 buildings were destroyed or badly damaged and three million people were displaced.
  • How the UK public, businesses, and community groups' response to the crisis by donating to the appeal, making it the third largest in DEC history.
  • The ways in which DEC charities are using funds to help meet the urgent and long-term needs of people in need, reaching over a million people in six months.
  • Challenges faced by the DEC and its member charities in both countries.
The DEC’s partnerships with organisations that support and strengthen the wider humanitarian response to the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
  • What comes next for the DEC response, with an increased focus on helping people recover and rebuild their lives and livelihoods, as well as healthcare and psychosocial support.
