The DEC has three criteria which must be met before we launch an appeal.

We often monitor crises that don't yet meet our criteria but may do in the future. Often our member charities are responding to these crises already and we encourage people who wish to help to donate to them. Alternatively you can donate to our Emergency Fund which will support the DEC’s next appeal, whether it’s a natural disaster, disease outbreak, or a crisis fuelled by drought or conflict.

Find out more about which crises we are monitoring below.

Afghanistan Earthquake

A devastating 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on 31 August, in the mountainous region close to the city of Jalalabad. More than 2,000 people were killed by the earthquake and the ensuing aftershocks, with houses and infrastructure destroyed. Landslides near to the epicentre of the earthquake have made it difficult for rescuers to access the worst hit areas. The humanitarian needs in Afghanistan were already significant, and a number of DEC charities are working to reach people with emergency support.

The DEC is deeply concerned for those impacted by this disaster, and we are closely monitoring the situation and assessing it against our criteria for launching a fundraising appeal. Those criteria are not currently met, but if you would like to help people affected by this crisis, you can donate to the following DEC charities who have launched emergency appeals:

Sudan Conflict

Conflict broke out in Sudan in April 2023 and has seen intense fighting, including in the capital, Khartoum and the northern Darfur region.

The UN reports over 12 million have been displaced, 8.6 million internally and 3.8 million into neighbouring countries. Two-thirds of the population, including 16 million children, are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. More than 25 million face acute hunger, and 755,000 children risk severe malnutrition.

Our members are responding inside Sudan across White and Blue Nile, Darfur, Kordofan, Khartoum, and Al Jazirah. In neighbouring countries, members are responding across the borders in Chad, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Central African Republic, supporting refugees and returnees to these countries. Response priorities include food security, protection, health, nutrition, shelter, and WASH.

The DEC is deeply concerned for the safety of civilians caught up in the fighting and the current humanitarian crisis. We are monitoring the situation closely and assessing it against our criteria for launching a national fundraising appeal in the UK.

Those criteria are not currently met, but several DEC member charities have a presence in Sudan or neighbouring countries. If you would like to help them respond and help people affected by this crisis, you can donate to the following DEC charities:

Pakistan Monsoon Floods

Pakistan's 2025 monsoon season has been exceptionally severe, with torrential rains and floods affecting all provinces. Heavy downpours began in mid-June and have continued in multiple spells, triggering countrywide flash floods, urban flooding, landslides and river overflows. The situation is particularly severe in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab provinces. Since the floods started, over 2.4 million people have been evacuated, and 922 people have been killed. The destruction has been widespread, with homes, businesses and farmland destroyed.

The DEC is very concerned for all those impacted by the flooding , and we have been closely monitoring the crisis against our criteria for launching a national fundraising appeal. Those criteria are not currently met, but a number of our member charities are responding and providing critical support.

If you would like to donate to help people impacted by this disaster, Islamic Relief have opened an emergency fundraising appeal.
